New Websites
Thursday, 18 September 2014 21:34

This site has fallen by the way side. Been busy with other things. Well, thats life.

I have another blog I created years ago at It is to showcase different photos I've taken of jazz musicians or venues.

I also created which is going to become a portfolio, once I figure out what type of stuff to put there. My resume is up there along with some code samples so far, but thats about it.

I've been trying to help out some friends with their websites. Currently updating the website for Bruce Harris at Also working with a friend of mine ( and his lol. The Jazz Community is annoyingly small it seems ) to create We've been a bit slacking on both unfortunately, I need to better my Web Project management skills on get on their cases about actually finishing the sites.

My day job is taking a lot of work from me too. Plus, just been busy with life. Had a new baby on April 20, 2014, and he's been taking up much of my time too. There is just no rest for the wicked.

I do miss street photography. I wish I could get back into it. This Saturday is the MP3 Experiment sponsored by Improv Everywhere and this weekend is the Makers Faire. I might drag my camera to the Makers Faire since they usually have cool stuff going about.

Savion Glover @ the Blue Note
Thursday, 14 June 2012 08:57

So this week Savion Glover is performing at the Blue Note. I had found out about this a few weeks back, I had originally gone to the Blue Notes website to see if McCoy Tyner was going to be there any time coming up, and to my surprise Savion Glover was having two nights where he was featuring McCoy Tyner. Yay, I get to see two acts I would very much enjoy to see on one stage.

Lol, the only problem with that is, where to sit? Its McCoy Tyner so I wanted to sit behind the keys, being that I also play piano but that seems rather pointless for a tap act. Well, I ended up sitting right in front of the stage, and with my monopod and camera in tow I was able to take some pics.

It was an exciting performance. I think I had a orgasm when they played "In a Sentimental Mood" who had another pianist, who's name escapes me at the moment. Lol.  It makes me wish I were so much better at the piano than I am, and its really inspiring to see live music from musicians who are so much better at it than I am. People that have spent more years with their craft than I have been on this planet. Anyways, I really enjoyed it.

Before hand I also went to go check out Ben Williams and the Sound Effect at Smalls. Ran into a few friends there and although I didn't stay for long I did get a few good pics from that set too. I will upload them once I do some more post processing on them. However, the Blue Note album is up, and can be seen at, and here is a shot from that album:

Savion Glover and Gerald Canon

Gerald Cannon and Savion Glover

In other news, this weekend I actually have a paying gig, yay. Shooting harpist Brandee Younger at the Bklyn Children's Museam. Shes going to be performing with what seems to be her "usual" set of people, Stacy Dillard on Sax, E.J. Strickland on Drums, Dezron Douglas on Bass. I am looking forward to this, and it should be tons of fun.

I really need to get my camera out more often. Soon as some of my student loans are paid off I seriously think I am going to quit and do the art thing for a year. Lol. I enjoy it but yeah, having a 9-5 is really getting in the way of other things I want to do.

I should Really Come back to this...
Monday, 12 March 2012 09:08

So,  I haven't been on this page in a while. I come back and I have photographic goodies.

Currently I am studying piano with Adam Birbuam and I came to his gig at smalls, and promised him photos. I've created a new gallery for these photos which is still a work in process as I haven't gotten though the post of all of the "good" images. For this Gig, it was Adam on keys, Yasushi Nakamura on Bass, and Rodney Green on drums.

Speaking of Adam, I also saw him last night at the Village Vanguard  with The Al Foster : counts the number of people that were playing : quartet was performing. It included Al Foster on Drums, Adam Birbuam on Piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and JD Allen on saxophone. ( Sorry if I don't have links up but if there isn't a link they don't have a personal website that isn't a myspace/facebook page and I'm not going to link to any social networking sites here ) It was a good night, they did some standards. I wish they allowed photography during the show as I was sitting right behind the piano the first set and could have had my pick of seats during the second so that I could get the rest of the band, but oh well. What can you do?

Hopefully, If i can find time between trying to learn two instruments, I'll get out to more gigs and take more photos. I'm also debating putting up some notes about what I do when it comes to post processing images and how I get shots in the low light conditions that are present in most jazz clubs. So, yes, I'm trying to prevent any more dust from settling on this website. There are a few more gigs I am hoping to check out coming up. Dezron Douglas is going to be at Smalls towards the end of March, and I'm hoping to go camera in hand. Um, there's something else coming up April 11 where harpist Brandee Younger, but I'm not sure if I'm going to that. if I do and they allow it, I'll have some more photos. lol.

Now that all of that has been said, I've posted some of the shots below but enjoy the gallery which has all of the images which have been processed from that night. Until later!

Its been a long time...
Monday, 08 August 2011 08:59

It's been a long time (long time) I shouldn'a left you (left you) Without a dope beat to step to (step to)...

Lol. ok. Enough with the random rap lyrics. I'm updating my website after how many months? I think the end of StarPerceptions is coming. I have plans on buying a new domain name to showcase my photos and random blogs about the miscellaneous Jazz events I go attend. I'm not sure, as I am not a writer, But my new website should be a fun project.

I haven't had my camera out in a while, and its time for me to get out there and take some photos. My friend Dezron has invited me to come see him perform at Dizzy's with Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets and I shall be there. The gig is August 15. I'm excited because there's a trumpet player. Lol, I've come to realize there are not as many musicians play trumpet as those that play sax. I always love to go and watch fellow trumpet players who are much better than I perform.

Last week I went to go see Terrance Blanchard at Birdland. He's one of my favorite trumpet player and has scored many movies I love ( including my favorite, Bamboozled ). I've looked forward to this performance since last year. It was a great set, although it was my first time seeing someone alter the sound of the horn during a live performance. I asked him what trumpet he played with because his trumpet looked like a horn I was interested in, the flumpet. His horn was made by the same company that does the flumpet: Monette. I'm not a fan of gold horns, but his was nice.  I still prefer silver hardware. Gold just looks gaudy to me.

Anyways, I didn't have time to stop home and get my camera when I went to go see Mr. Blanchard. I am still kicking myself in the behind for that. When i go see Dezron, I am going to bring my camera. It's been too long since I've taken photos and I've missed out on pretty of good opportunities... Hopefully Dizzy's has good light. Its really hit or miss when it comes to Jazz venues and lighting. But fortunately i have several fast lenses. I'll make it work.

Anyways, this is just an update. One of these days I am going to post new pictures, and I will keep you updated when I do. :-)

**Update** so I brought a new domain name, will be my next site. The name comes from the ii V I jazz progression, since this site will be dedicated to pictures I take at different venues. I'm excited to be working on this. Right now there is just a holder page, but I will start working on the site soon.

This weekend I'm hoping to go to the Cherry Blossom festival at the botanical gardens, and hopefully I'll catch some good pictures. However, I may end up going to Baltimore to a wax museum.
